Unique stories
Guess what plant butchers once used to sweep their blocks? Butcher's broom (Ruscus aculeatus) is also known as knee holly as it grows below knee height and resembles holly. Indeed the small, evergreen bush grows upright stems covered with prickly, leaf-like cladophylls and round, glossy red fruits. Although the rest of the shrub has been used medicinally or culinary, its the root (or rhizome) that is the most renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, among others.
