Just like potatoes, tomatoes and the deadly belladonna, fresh cape gooseberries are a member of the nightshade family. They are native to South America, where cultivation of the fruit can be traced back to the Inca Empire.
Physalis peruviana is a small, round orange fruit similar in size and shape to a cherry tomato. Each fruit is enveloped in a papery cloak, or calyx, which protects the fruit as it grows. Cape gooseberries are particularly popular in autumn, and are even sometimes known as Halloween Queen, perhaps in part thanks to these delicate husks surrounding the bright flame-coloured fruit that makes them look like miniature paper lanterns.
